A brand film is a short film about what a company believes and how it works, rather than about a single product or offer. It earns attention with a story, real people and real places, and it often runs one to three minutes on a website, at events and at the start of a campaign. A commercial is built to sell something specific in a paid slot, often 15 to 60 seconds long, and it asks the viewer to act.
At Nowa Film, a Toronto video production company, brand films are part of our video production work, which usually costs $3,500 to $25,000 CAD. The difference matters before the brief is written: a commercial is planned around the action it asks for, a brand film around what the viewer should remember about the company.
What a brand film is for
A brand film gives an audience a reason to trust a company before they compare its products. It answers the questions a feature list leaves open: why the company exists, how its people work, what it will not compromise on. The viewer should leave with a feeling and one clear idea about the company.
Because it is not tied to one offer or one price, a brand film tends to stay useful for longer than a campaign ad. The same film can open a conference, sit on the about page, introduce the company in a sales meeting and give a new hire a sense of the place before their first day.
Brand film, commercial, corporate video, product film or customer story?
These formats overlap, and one production can feed several of them. They still do different jobs, and a brief that mixes them tends to produce a film that does none of them well. The lengths below are common working ranges, not rules. The destination decides.
| Film type | Purpose | Typical length | Where it runs | What it needs to work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brand film | Show what the company believes and how it works | Often 1 to 3 minutes, plus shorter cuts | Website, events, presentations, recruiting | One idea, real people and places, restraint |
| Commercial | Sell a product, offer or message | Often 15 to 60 seconds | TV, pre-roll, paid social | A fast hook, one message, a clear next step |
| Corporate video | Explain the company to clients, staff or investors | Often 1 to 5 minutes | Website, sales meetings, internal channels | Accurate content, credible speakers, early approvals |
| Product film | Show how a product looks, works and fits a space | Often 30 seconds to 2 minutes | Product pages, showrooms, trade shows, ads | The product in real use, close detail, careful light |
| Customer story | Let a customer explain a problem and what changed | Often 1 to 3 minutes | Sales pages, case studies, follow-up emails | A willing customer and a specific before and after |
The Igne Ferro film we made is a product film, which makes it a useful comparison. It moves through fireplaces in finished rooms: a long linear unit in a white marble wall, one framed in green-grey stone against dark wood, a classic firebox in a columned marble mantel. Close shots of flames over black chips sit between them, and the film ends in a white kitchen with a long island. The product is the subject. A brand film for a fireplace maker would turn the camera toward the company: the people who design the units, the place they are made, the reason the company exists.

What makes a brand film work?
One idea. A brand film can carry one idea well and two ideas poorly. Write it as a single sentence before anyone chooses visual references. If the sentence needs an “and also”, the film is drifting toward a corporate video.
Real people and places. Film the team at work, the room where the product is made, the customer in their own space. Real settings take more planning: access, light you cannot fully control, people who are not actors. They are also the part of the film a competitor cannot copy.
Restraint. Fewer messages and fewer logos give each image time to land. The opening film we made for Change Conference in 2023 shows how far that can go. Single words on black cards cut between images of a young man under a pale sky, a hand at a VCR, lightning, a nebula, wildflowers, a forest path and a cross on a hill against a red storm sky. The film says very little in words and a great deal in pictures. For the same conference we also made commercial openers titled “Who am I?” and “Am I what I do?”.
Sound and pacing. Music, room tone and silence carry much of the feeling. Choose the music direction early, because a licensed track and an original score change both the budget and the edit. Let shots run long enough to be seen, and mix for where the film will actually play: a conference hall and a phone speaker need different decisions.
How long should a brand film be, and where does it run?
As long as the idea needs and no longer. A full brand film often runs one to three minutes; an event opener or a web version can be shorter. The length follows the destination, so plan a version for each place the film will play:
- Website: the full film on the home or about page, where visitors have chosen to watch.
- Events: an opening film on the venue screens before a keynote or the first session.
- Sales and investor meetings: a version that introduces the company in the first minutes.
- Recruiting: the full film, or a cut that stays with the team and the work.
- Paid and social placements: shorter cutdowns with their own openings, rather than the full film.
Our own Nowa Film studio reel sits at the short end. A reel shows what a studio makes before anyone reads about it, which is the job a brand film does for any company.
How do you brief a brand film?
Start with our copyable video brief, which covers audience, evidence, deliverables, budget and approvals. A brand film needs five more answers before the creative work begins:
- What do you believe that a competitor could not say with a straight face?
- What can we film that proves it: people, places, a process, a customer?
- Who is the film for first: buyers, recruits, investors or partners?
- What must it not become: a feature list, a speech from the chief executive, a parade of logos?
- Where will it play first, and which shorter versions must it feed?
Expect the first creative step to be an idea and a treatment, before any shot list. Approve the idea, then the plan. Reversing that order is how a brand film ends up as polished footage with nothing to say.
Plan the cutdowns with the brand film
A brand film rarely runs alone. The campaign around it may need a 30-second cut for paid placements, a vertical version, a captioned version for people watching without sound and a still frame for the launch post. Each short version needs its own opening and ending, which means it needs its own shots.
Decide those versions at the brief, so the shoot captures them. Our guide to planning cutdowns before the shoot sets out a deliverable line for every edit. For a brand film, add one check: does the 30-second version still carry the one idea, or has it turned into a commercial with nothing to sell?
What does a brand film cost?
At Nowa Film, a brand film falls within video production, which usually costs $3,500 to $25,000 CAD. When the brand film anchors a paid campaign, with spots for TV, pre-roll and paid social cut around it, the work is closer to commercial production, which usually costs $4,000 to $50,000. Every project is quoted to its scope, and our rates page lists each service.
Within either range, these are the factors that move the number:
- Shoot days and the number of locations.
- Who appears on camera: your own team, your customers or cast talent.
- The crew, lighting and art direction the idea needs.
- Music: a licensed track or an original score.
- The number of cutdowns, formats and languages.
- Travel, when the people or places the film needs are outside Toronto.

Quick answers
What is the difference between a brand film and a commercial?
A brand film shows what a company believes and how it works, using a story, real people and real places, and often runs one to three minutes on a website, at events and in presentations. A commercial sells a specific product, offer or message in a paid slot, often 15 to 60 seconds long, and asks the viewer to act.
How long should a brand film be?
As long as its one idea needs and no longer. A full brand film often runs one to three minutes, while event openers and web versions can be shorter. Plan the shorter cutdowns, vertical versions and captioned versions at the brief, because each needs its own opening and ending, and so its own shots.
